My Essential Oil Story

I was first introduced to essential oils when Joe was in the hospital with leukemia. They had massage therapists that worked the room when the kids got their chemo. These women would ask how he was feeling or what he was experiencing and massage him with the appropriate oils. I didn’t know whether I thought it worked, but Joey loved it! He would sit back and relax and let her rub his feet and hands. I was intrigued, but my focus was more on my son and appreciation of the service. If he was happy, I was happy.

A few years later, I was at a softball tournament talking to a friend about seasonal allergies. She was telling me how she started using essential oils and didn’t need to use over-the-counter medications anymore. Hmmm – My Bella had a lot of allergies. Not too long after, she hosted a Doterra Essential Oil party, and I attended.

What are your greatest concerns, they asked?

It was pretty hard to narrow that long list down but settled on falling sleeping as my number one problem.

I struggle turning my mom-brain off, and my husband’s snoring did not help. I am that person who goes to bed and remembers all the things I did NOT do during the day. Menopause and the hot flashes don’t help. I can probably give you ten reasons why so many of us women have difficulty sleeping.

About once a week, I would take melatonin or Xanax out of desperation. Even though Melatonin is OTC, I would have crazy dreams and feel foggy the next day. Xanax is highly addictive and I had enough dealing with those issues at various points in my life. I’m not particularly eager to take Advil unless I am desperate, so you can imagine how I struggle with medications.

The recommendation for me was Serenity Oil. It promotes a feeling of calm and eases stress to aide in that quest for a good night’s sleep. For my husband’s snoring, Breathe Essential Oil. So that was what I bought. I didn’t buy too many things because I am a skeptic. I had to see for myself if this would work.

That same night, I went home and put my new oils to the test.

A drop behind my ears and on my wrists – just like putting on perfume. Rub a little more on my palms, cup my face, and take a few deep breaths – Aahhh! I love the smells of nature, so let me tell you I loved this fragrance.

I would sleep with my hands near my face so that I could breathe it in all night. On more stressful nights, it would take a little longer to fall asleep. I learned to put a little bit under my feet and that was the clincher! For me, the difference was noticeable. I fell asleep quicker and slept better. Did you know the soles are a great absorption point for your body? I will vouch for that truth.

After sleeping well for three weeks in a row and getting on a good sleep pattern, I did not need to use it every night. Whenever I get on a bad roll, I start using it again. Let me tell you; the Serenity Oil was a go-to during the Pandemic.

It was a game-changer for me. That small jar lasted me over a year, and I was sleeping sooo much better with no crazy side effects. You can’t put a price on a good night of rest, but in this case, it was pennies.

Now, I use a few drops of Lavender Essential Oil on my pillow at night, and when it isn’t enough, I use Serenity Oil.

As my husband has gotten older, he snores more and more.

I have an extra guest room in my house now since I am down three kids, and I threaten to sleep in there. If he has a couple of drinks or his allergies kick in … ugh. The thought of putting the pillow over his face has occurred to me at 2:30 am when the bed shakes from the loudness of it.

Do you know what I do?

I put a few drops of Breathe on his pillow right under his nose, and he doesn’t even know it. Until now, if he reads this – but guess what? After a few minutes of breathing it in unbeknownst to himself, it stops.

He is a pretty healthy guy, so he rarely gets sick, but when he gets a cold, he will use it, and it works to decongest him and again, no snoring!

I think we can all agree that a good night of sleep is key in life.

Not too long after that, my daughter who was a freshman in college, called upset over her ADHD. She was having problems focusing and her grades were slipping. She mentioned adderall and I said she would have to talk to the doctor and go thru the testing. I warned her not to try it, but she did and it wasn’t good – it gave her severe anxiety. Again, I spoke to my friend and she recommended InTune essential oil. By the grace of God, it worked and her grades went back up!

Six months ago, I decide to sign up and get a whole array of essential oils.

At the same time, I was starting a new job and the holidays came, so I didn’t have the time to play with them. January and February were slow, but I am a great procrastinator, so I did what I do best. I had all that time to work on the oils and never did it. What put me over the edge and finally on the road to learning? The damn virus.

I was sitting around enjoying the birds and nature, wishing I could live on a farm and live off the land. I already eat mostly organic, but between this whacky virus and the state of our healthcare system, I decided to go as organic and natural as possible in all ways.

That’s why I am even embracing my gray hair. I want to know what is going into my body, and I no longer care to contribute to pharmaceutical or chemical companies. My niece recently ran into health problems with a chemical called Diacetyl allowed in vape cartridges and I can’t understand why it isn’t outlawed. The powers that be know it is life-threatening, so why is it still allowed? Because making money has been put before health. I figure this is also my way of not contributing to those economics or big Pharma.

So that is my essential oil story!

I want to go as organic and healthy as I can; continue to help people with my stories and now share some natural alternatives to living a healthier life. This blog will stay the same, but with a link to take you to my “oil of the week.” I am genuinely excited to learn and share with all of you.

Why did I choose DoTERRA? Because they are 100% pure certified therapeutic essential oils, are ethically sourced, and provide income to small farmers in underdeveloped areas as all around the world.

        1. Is there anything I can try and help you with?

          1. I need good help to make my blog active. I think I have to upgrade from free plan to payment plan. That’s what I think. What do you think?

          2. So I did find your website and you have the address as different than you have here. It says wwww and I am not sure why or how it should be www. and you have my own word but it should be my own word(s). I think you can correct that yourself and not pay.

          3. Ok. I don’t why it’s like that but I wish I could change it

          4. I would think it would be easy – it’s just changing your address. Let me see if I can figure it out from my end and then tell you.

          5. Thanks so much dear

  4. I am glad you found a solution! I tried peppermint essential oils for my migraines a few years back. It didn’t help me at all, unfortunately. If I could find a non medication solution I would be ecstatic!

    1. Hi Nicole – Peppermint Oil may not have been enough … there is something called tension blend that has peppermint in it, but more for migraines. You can add a little bit of Copaiba to that, too. Let me know if you have any questions. xoxo

  5. I love your oils my dear….

    1. There are others I haven’t told you about yet …

  6. I’m a huge fan of good quality oils! I use both DoTerra and Young Living, and have noticed a lot of good changes for both health and mindset. Happy for you Sandy!
