My Children: The Greatest Mother’s Day Gift

By the grace of God, how blessed I am! Here I sit at my desk, looking out the window and reflecting on where my five children are in their lives today. It is with great pride that I can say they are all doing wonderfully. I don’t know what tomorrow will bring, but today, I celebrate.

Last night at 12:30, I got a text from my oldest son telling me that he loves me. It was out of the blue and a completely unexpected declaration of love – the very best kind! A small moment that fills my heart, just as much as all the big moments that have brought me such joy.

Being a mom isn’t easy.

I made mistakes all the time, said the wrong things, lost my temper at the wrong times, and continue to do so. We hope we are always doing it right, but that’s impossible. Times change, ideologies are growing and forming as the world changes, and we moms have to be able to adapt and grow with our children. We learn to listen to and respect their opinions. Our hearts break when they are sad, and we celebrate all of their accomplishments because they are ours too.

It is our blessing from the moment we give birth, and for the rest of our lives, to be honored with a love like no other. They take us on an emotional roller coaster, but it is the ride of our lives! A fellow blogger, Simply Katricia, recently interviewed me for International Woman’s Day. When asked what my greatest satisfaction was, I said raising my children. The only thing I can remember wanting to be when I grew up was a mom. It was my dream job.

Moms are some of the strongest people in the world.

We have to be to survive and protect, always putting our children first. We come in all varieties and have several different names. There is no perfect mom, as we are all flawed, but that is the beauty of it! Life would be so dull if we weren’t continually learning and being challenged. Albeit, sometimes we may have wished for a little more tedious, but that wouldn’t be real life, would it?

Lord knows, it was a lot of work, but I have to thank my kids for making me into the human that I am today. I grew right along with them. As I was working hard to set an example for them, they were helping me be that person I wanted to be. They supported me and stuck by my side no matter what decisions I made for them and us as a family.

There were many times my children could have rebelled, and they had a right to, but they didn’t. Don’t get me wrong, we had A LOT of teenage rebellion, but they never threw any of my choices back in my face. They showed me trust and believed that I did know what was best for them. So this Mother’s Day, I want to thank them for allowing me to be that mom. For teaching me about unconditional love, acceptance, and what’s truly important.

It is a different kind of mother’s day weekend this year.

But I am happy knowing my babies are all happy, healthy, and safe in their lives. I never felt a need to be revered. For me, it is an honor knowing my kids are good, caring human beings with a generous heart, a kind smile, and all somebody I would also choose to be my friend. This is the best present I can be graced with. Thank you, God!

Also, as always a big thank you and Happy Mother’s Day to my own mom. She continues to be a role model of strength for this family. She showed me how to have the courage to live life my way and for what was in the best interest of my children, not what society dictates. I would have never made it this far without her support.

Also, a very happy Mother’s Day to my daughter, a mom of three beautiful children. A woman who proves you can do it all! She has a successful career while being the best mom, friend, sister, and one of the best daughters anyone can ask for in their life.

Happy and Blessed Mother’s Day to all the moms, caretakers, and parents who play both roles. I know this is a day that is so hard for so many, and to you, I send my love and hugs.

Much Love,

Sandy
